Colouring Your Hair for Special Effect

Special effects hair colouring is fun and different. From all indications, it’s going to be one of the looks you expect to see out in the street. Feeling like some blue punch or red devil or want to get the look before others? Just think of your favorite colour, as everything is available in the more bold and shocking tone. The majority of these colours is semi-permanent and will wash out a bit every time you shampoo. The effect should last 6-8 weeks, giving you time to decide if you wish to touch up or remove.

Colouring Your Hair for Special Effect

One thing to remember is that, in some cases, hair does have to be completely bleached out before the special colour is applied. If you’re not sure, consult your stylist. Though safe when done correctly, the process does take a toll on hair. The following steps explain how to colour at home. If this is your first time using colour, consider a professional consult first.

  1. Shampoo your hair but do not condition. Completely towel dry your hair, removing all moisture. Apply petroleum jelly around your hairline and ears. If colour comes into contact with skin it will be protected from staining.

  2. Put on your plastic gloves that came with the product.

  3. For short hair, pour ½ of the amount into a bowl, ¾ of a bottle if hair is shoulder length or more. Apply evenly to your hair with a tint brush or similar brush. Saturate your hair with colour but do not work into the scalp as it will appear stained.

  4. Comb colour through hair and leave on according to product directions. Always read instructions at least twice. If you have any questions or something is confusing to you, stop. Call the helpline or reconsider going to a professional stylist. The product you purchase can always be returned, if not opened.

  5. After leaving on colour the desired amount of time, rinse your hair in lukewarm water. Towel blot dry and apply in after care conditioner that accompanied the product. Rinse with warm water and then with a cool rinse. Blow dry and, once again, finish with a cool setting. Style as usual.

colouring hair at home

Now that you have the basics of at home colouring, you may want to go the salon and let a professional do your colour. The results may last longer and be a gentler process on your hair. If you would like to consider this, then before even going there, consider a new do. Would you like to sport a different cut, one that will match the intensity of your new colour? If so, then visit the salon for the initial consult concerning your hair cut. You may find yourself going from cut to colour all in the same day and emerging updated, on the edge and ready for some fun!

Some additional tips: There is a new trend of anything goes in prepping for colour. When the stylist or the box says “please do not wash your hair before your appointment” there’s a good reason why. The oil that the scalp produces in the 24 hours before is just the right protection for your scalp to allow your hair to receive the colour rather than the scalp. Colour lasts longer and the overall process is healthier too.
