How to Colour Your Hair at Home
If you are considering colouring your hair at home, there’s no better
time than now to do so! It’s actually pretty simple to accomplish. A few
things do need to be considered before you go pick out the product to
bring home and apply. The following steps are important to know and
follow, but with a little practice you will be an old pro no time!
- In choosing your colour, consider your skin tone. If you have
warm colouring to your skin, then go with red, auburn or gold tones.
Do not consider ash tones. They do not compliment your skin tone.
- In picking your product, don’t just go by the picture of the
model on the box. Look for the guideline on the box explaining if
your hair is this tone, the results will be this tone. You will be
able to judge specifically if that is the colour you are hoping for.
Then look at the model and see if you are inspired by her look!
- It’s tempting to skip the strand test. If this is your first
time, though, don’t. Instead, follow the instructions and review
results. As you become familiar with colouring your hair, you may
grow more comfortable skipping the test. It’s your decision. If you
decide to switch brands, you may want to, once again, do the strand
test. Hair colouring products are basically the same formulas with a
small change. Still, that’s all it takes to experience an allergic
reaction.
- Read the instructions twice and keep them handy as you begin.
Put the gloves on before you begin to mix the dye. Your finger will
come into contact with the open tip of the bottle and can stain your
finger, lasting a couple of days.
- If you are hoping to touch up your roots with a product
specifically for this area, then do not apply to your entire head of
hair, but stick with the roots. This product is designed for roots
and could create a different texture of colour, if applied
incorrectly.
- Use a timer that has a bell of some sort. Set it exactly as it
should be and do not hesitate when the bell rings. Rinse your hair
thoroughly with lukewarm water. Rinse until the water runs clear.
- Blot dry hair and apply deep conditioning treatment as directed.
Most products come with a tube that has several applications of
conditioner to use once a week until time to colour again. Use it,
as it’s specially formulated to add durability to your new colour,
and help maintain healthy hair.
- It’s not recommended to perm or straighten your hair for several
weeks after you colour.

If you end up with a colour that you did not expect, don’t panic.
Refer to the box for the helpline assistance number and call for their
advice. If they cannot resolve the issue, then head for your favorite
salon and ask for help. Do not go back to the store and purchase another
colour to apply. At this point, you need professional advice in one form
or the other.
